Military members who have a dependent living with a disability may face unique challenges. Their loved one may need special medical care or tailored educational services. The Execptional Family Member Program provides support for these families. 

When claiming Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, each spouse must meet the eligibility criteria independently. SSDI considers your individual work history and earnings to qualify.

If you rely on Social Security disability benefits programs such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), the year ahead will offer a somewhat minimal amount of relief financially.

There are many benefits to having a special needs trust that go far beyond the ability to maintain eligibility for SSI or Medicaid. For example, although Social Security Disability Insurance does not have asset or income requirements, this does not mean that SSDI beneficiaries should not have special needs trusts. 

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017 made significant changes to the U.S. tax code. Many of its provisions are set to expire, or "sunset," at the end of 2025. It also made three key changes to ABLE accounts that are scheduled to expire in 2025.

A structured settlement is ideally suited as partial or full funding for a first-party special needs trust with a disabled beneficiary. It also lowers administration costs since only trust assets are subject to fees.

ABLE accounts can enhance quality of life for people with disabilities, offering financial protection while preserving access to public benefits for some individuals.
